There is no better way to earn huge chunks of miles than by taking advantage of generous credit card sign up offers. This is by far the most generous one out there for UK residents at the moment.
This credit card could allow you to sit here…
And sleep here…
For next to nothing…
The Cards
The credit card is FREE and is issued by MBNA and actually comes with two cards. An American Express and a Visa. You will earn 1.5 AAdvantage miles per £1 spent on the Amex and 1.5 AAdvantage miles per £2 spent on the Visa. Fantastic for those worried about only having an Amex.
The Bonus
Here is what you have to spend to trigger the bonus:
Spend |
Bonus |
First Purchase |
5,000 Miles |
£1,500 within 90 days |
Additional 10,000 Miles |
£5,000 within 180 days |
Additional 20,000 Miles |
All spending on both the Amex and Visa cards will count towards these targets, so the issue of having to find Amex accepting retailers drops away. Assuming you can spend the £5,000 in 6 months over the two cards, you could be sat on as many as 42,500 AAdvantage miles. You can order free supplementary cards for family/partners. All spending will be pooled towards hitting the targets.
AAdvantage Miles
It may seem unintuitive to be collecting miles for the American Airlines frequent flyer program “AAdvantage” but it makes far more sense than you may initially think.
· AAdvantage miles can be earned and spent on American Airlines partner airlines. Here are a selection of some of AAdvantage’s partners:
- Air Berlin
- British Airways
- Cathay Pacific
- Finnair
- Iberia
- Japan Airlines
- LAN
- Malaysia Airlines
- Qantas
- Royal Jordanian
- S7
- Etihad
- Gulf Air
- El Al
· AA do not charge the hefty “YQ” fuel surcharges that British Airways charge. Even if you use Avios to pay for an American Airlines flight, you will still pay these BA surcharges. You could save up to £200 in taxes just by paying for the same flight with AAdvantage miles instead of Avios.
· Click here for AA’s redemption chart to see how many miles your flight will cost.
· You will see from this chart that some redemptions are cheaper than using Avios. Asia, India, Middle East and South Africa routes are generally all cheaper using AAdvantage miles for a British Airways flight. (E.g. 60,000 vs. 80,000 to India in Business Class)
· Using AA’s partner airline “Etihad”, 40,000 miles would get you to the Middle East in First Class.

In conclusion
This is a fantastic offer, not to be missed. The huge bonus, benefits of using AAdvantage miles, and the dual card (Amex/Visa) facility combine to make this a real one off.
